Setting Up for 2024-2025: Organizing Our Homeschool Space for the New Year
As the 2024-2025 homeschool year approaches, it’s time to get organized and ready for another year of learning and growth. As a homeschooling family of four entering our eighth year, we’ve honed our approach to creating a functional and clutter-free homeschool environment that works for us. Here’s a look at how we’re setting up our homeschool space to ensure a smooth start to the new year.

Our Homeschool Space: Small Yet Functional
We don’t have a dedicated homeschool room, but that doesn’t stop us from making the most of our space. We’ve set up our homeschool area in our living room, where we use a custom-built Ikea countertop table with cabinets on each end. Each of our kids—one entering seventh grade and the other third grade—has their own cabinet for their homeschool materials. The cabinets are organized to keep everything they need within reach, while the countertop provides a central workspace.
Underneath the table, we’ve created a cozy spot for our guinea pig, which adds a touch of warmth to our learning environment. Nearby, we have an Ikea cabinet where each child has a designated shelf for their homeschool materials. We also use a rolling cart that houses all the essentials, such as instructor manuals and shared materials. This setup not only keeps our living room neat but also ensures that everything has its place.
The Process: Organizing for Success
At the end of each semester and school year, I like to take the time to pull everything out of our homeschool spaces, give it a thorough cleaning, and reorganize for the new year. This process involves going through all the materials, discarding anything unnecessary, and making room for new items. For example, at the end of the school year, we bring out the fun stuff—art supplies, games, and other engaging activities—that we didn’t get to during the year. This keeps the kids entertained and allows them to explore their creativity over the summer.
As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we remove the summer activities and replace them with the materials needed for the new grade levels. This approach helps us start the year fresh and organized, with everything in its place and ready to go.
Turning Over from Summer to School Year
One of the first steps in our setup process is clearing off our school table, which often accumulates various items throughout the day. With the help of my husband, we sorted through everything, deciding what stays and what goes. Each child’s cabinet was emptied and then refilled with their grade-specific materials.
For our seventh grader, the shelves of her cabinet are now filled with her daily essentials, including math, world history, and robotics materials. Similarly, our third grader’s cabinet is stocked with her daily workbooks and other necessary items. Both kids have plenty of extra space this year, thanks to our increased use of digital resources.
The Cart: Centralized and Streamlined
Our rolling cart is another crucial element of our homeschool setup. This year, it’s more streamlined than ever, with all the necessary materials neatly organized. The cart is about instructor manuals and shared materials, like math blocks. The top level holds our younger child’s materials on the left, our older child’s in the middle, and shared items on the right. The second level houses math blocks and other manipulatives, while the bottom level has ample space for additional resources.
Having everything organized in this way makes it easy for the kids to grab what they need and get to work, keeping our homeschool day running smoothly.

With everything in place, we’re feeling more than ready to embark on our eighth year of homeschooling. The combination of a well-organized space, clear systems, and a clutter-free environment helps us stay focused on what matters most—learning and growing together.
