Why I Am Speaking Up – Even If It’s Controversial
Sometimes silence is not an option. As a secular homeschool mom, I know that Speaking Up can feel controversial, but it is necessary. Today I want to share why I am raising my voice on topics that directly impact our families, our kids, and our communities. These issues include women’s rights, race, LGBTQ+ and trans rights, and gun safety. This is not just about homeschooling. It is about the world we are preparing our children to step into. Homeschooling is about freedom, and that freedom goes beyond curriculum choices. It includes protecting human rights, safety, and equality.

Why I Am Hesitant to Speak Up
I will admit, I have hesitated to speak on these topics because speaking up comes with risks. People face real-life consequences for sharing their views. Hate, backlash, and even threats are real, and I want to acknowledge that. But the issues we are discussing are not just political talking points. They are real-life issues affecting real-life people. As homeschool families, these issues matter because they impact the community we are raising our children in.
Race-Based Stops and Inequality
For families in our community, race-based stops are a genuine concern. The Supreme Court recently ruled on cases that make visible, Latin-appearing people feel unsafe simply because of how they look Supreme Court ruling. As homeschoolers, we need to be aware of these realities and support our friends and neighbors to ensure everyone feels safe in their community.
Gay and Trans Rights
LGBTQ+ families are facing threats to their legal protections and parental rights. Every parent has to ask, how many children must be harmed before laws change? This is a critical conversation for any parent who prioritizes safety, including homeschoolers.
Women’s Health
Access to women’s health care, including birth control and abortion-related medications, is being restricted in many states South Carolina Proposed Law. Even for women who are not seeking an abortion, these restrictions can make routine care impossible. Speaking Up is necessary to protect the health and rights of women everywhere.
Political Hypocrisy and Silencing
The political landscape is filled with contradictions. From extreme Christian nationalism to biased censorship and the uneven enforcement of laws, it is clear that these issues affect everyday people more than politicians. Speaking Up requires courage, but staying silent allows injustice to grow.
How I Approach Tough Conversations
I try to approach difficult topics thoughtfully. I ask questions like, “Are you well informed?” and “Do you genuinely support this stance?” Not everyone needs access to every part of our lives, but everyone deserves respect. Speaking Up is about creating safe spaces for dialogue and standing up for those who cannot.
What You Can Do
Even small actions matter. Volunteering, supporting creators who promote positive messages, and educating yourself and others are all forms of activism. You can make a difference in your homeschool community and beyond. Change does not happen overnight, but each step matters.
Final Thoughts
Speaking Up is exhausting and often controversial, but it is essential. Our children are watching us navigate the world. They see how we respond to injustice, inequality, and danger. As homeschoolers, we have the opportunity to teach them that freedom and education come with responsibility. We can choose to stay quiet or choose to take action. For me, speaking up is the choice I cannot ignore.
