Turning Over Our Homeschool (Again!) — And Why It Feels So Different This Year
Hey y’all, Shanna here with Making Everyday Magic! If you’ve been around a while, you know that one of my favorite things about homeschooling—yes, really—is turning over our homeschool space each year. But this time? It’s different.
We’ve had a lot of change this year. A move, less space, new routines, and big transitions as we wrap up our 2024–2025 homeschool year and head into year nine. We’ll have an eighth grader and a fourth grader this fall, and the shift into those stages already feels real.

What Turning Over Our Homeschool Looks Like
This tradition is more than just putting books on shelves. It’s a mental reset. It’s packing away the curriculum and clearing the decks. It’s making room for summer fun and letting our brains take a breather before diving back in come fall.
Here’s what I usually do:

Pack away finished curriculum and papers

Clean out supplies we didn’t use or need

Pull out fresh activities for summer—books, games, creative tools

Reevaluate what we actually use in the space
It gives us closure, it gives me peace of mind, and it’s an awesome way to reflect on how far we’ve come.
A Little Different This Year…
So here’s the twist—this year, we’ve got even less space than ever. And while we’ve never had a fully dedicated homeschool room, this year really made me ask: what do we actually need to make this work?
We’re shifting to a simplified system. That means fewer materials out in the open, a more minimalist feel, and prioritizing the things we truly love and use. It’s freeing, honestly.
Plus, I’m fully leaning into the seasonal rhythm of homeschool life. I want our summer to feel different from our school year. So yes, I’m packing away the textbooks and pulling out puzzles, crafts, and family fun—because learning never stops, but the how we learn shifts.
A Homeschool Tradition Worth Keeping
Even when everything else changes—grades, curriculum, living spaces—this little ritual of turning over our homeschool keeps me grounded. It’s a great way to:

Close out the year intentionally

Celebrate the growth and memories

Reset our mindset and our materials
If you’ve never done it before, give it a try! You don’t need a full room—just a corner, a shelf, or even a bin. It’s not about how much you have, it’s about being intentional with what you keep and how you use it.
Final Thoughts
Turning over our homeschool is how I mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. It’s messy, it’s cathartic, and yes—it’s one of my absolute favorite parts of this homeschool life.
