Hey, homeschool families! It’s been a minute, but I’m back to answer some of your questions. Some of these aren’t necessarily about homeschooling, but they’re still super fun and interesting because—let’s be real—we’re people too! Let’s dive in and see how many we can get through.
If you’re new here, I’m Shanna, a homeschool mom of two, and we’ve been on this homeschooling journey for over eight years. Now, let’s tackle some of your questions—no particular order, just straight from the heart!

1. Have You Started High School Planning?
So, about high school planning—it’s not happening in the traditional sense just yet. I’m not sitting down to plan out the 10th-grade biology book just yet, but I’m definitely thinking long-term. I’ve started considering the options available for high school and making sure I’m staying on track. I’m not jumping ahead, but I like keeping my options open.
As far as accounts to follow, I keep it real with those whose kids are around the same age as mine. I enjoy watching Homeschool Happy Hour and Project Happy Home. These accounts share a lot of helpful high school insights. And one of the biggest inspirations for me is David from History for the Ages. He speaks highly of homeschoolers, and that just gives me the encouragement I need to keep going!
2. Do You Track Progress and Grades?
Now, this one’s a bit tricky. Since we homeschool in Texas, I’m not required to track anything or report it. Honestly, I work with my kids side by side every day. That means I know where we’re at with their work.
For grades? I give tests occasionally to ensure my kids are getting the experience of test-taking. But tracking grades isn’t really a thing in our homeschool. I prefer focusing on the learning, not the numbers. That said, I do have a system in place for keeping track of progress informally—it’s just not a formal gradebook!
3. Spring Break Plans?
Ah, the elusive spring break! In our house, it really depends on how the school year is going. If we need to take a break, we’ll make it happen. If not, we’ll push through until summer. We don’t have vacation plans at the moment, but we’re always open to a spontaneous change of scenery if the need arises.
4. Do You Monetize Your Homeschooling Journey?
I’ve had a lot of questions about the logistics of homeschooling on YouTube. While some people make a ton of money creating content, I’m here because I genuinely want to share what we’re doing, not to rake in a paycheck. I always disclose when there’s a sponsored post or affiliate link, but I only work with brands I genuinely believe in. I’d rather be picky about my partnerships than just accept everything that comes my way.
I know the RPM (revenue per thousand views) is low for my channel, but I don’t mind. For me, this is about making connections, learning about new curriculums, and providing honest feedback. 5. What’s It Like to Homeschool in Houston?
Now, let’s talk about life in Houston! If you’re considering moving here or just curious about how homeschooling works in a big city, here’s what you need to know.
Houston has so much to offer! It’s a mix of big-city amenities and a small-town feel, especially when it comes to community support. There are tons of resources for homeschoolers—museums, art classes, fencing, and dance just to name a few. Plus, Houston’s affordability makes it an attractive place to raise a family.
We’ve got excellent museums, a vibrant food scene, and fantastic green spaces. If you love theater or live performances, Houston’s arts scene will keep you busy all year long. Whether you’re into history, nature, or culture, there’s something for everyone here!
