🧪 Science Options For Next Year | Using LEGOs for Homeschool Science
It’s time.
It’s time to look ahead, plan forward, and start choosing our science options for next year.
Another homeschool year is just around the corner, and with it comes the fresh opportunity to discover new, exciting, and—most importantly—secular science resources that actually work for our unique learning styles and interests.
If you’ve been here a while, you already know: I don’t follow a one-size-fits-all approach to homeschooling. I tweak, adapt, and blend as much as I can to fit the needs of my real-life kids, not just what a teacher’s guide says. This year, that mindset is leading me into new territory with some seriously fun science options—including one that brings in LEGOs. Yes, actual LEGOs.
Let’s talk science options for next year, and why I’m leaning into hands-on physics, multi-level learning, and out-of-the-box resources like Edible Knowledge’s Homeschool Physics with LEGOs set.

Planning for 2025–2026 Homeschool Science
For the 2025–2026 homeschool year, we’ll have an incoming eighth grader and an incoming fourth grader. That means I’m again in the thick of planning how to combine lessons where it makes sense—and science is one of those subjects that combines beautifully.
Science is just better with a group. The experiments, the questions, the messy discoveries—it all flows more naturally when you can do it once and tailor the expectations for each child. I can teach the same concept and then adjust the assignments: full written responses from my eighth grader, while my fourth grader may do multiple choice or fill-in-the-blanks. Same topic, different output.
When it comes to choosing homeschool science curriculum, my number one filter is secular. Always. And if you’ve looked around the homeschool world lately, you know that truly secular science is still shockingly hard to come by.
Last year, we used the Middle School Chemistry curriculum from the American Chemistry Society, and it was amazing. Robust, clear, thoughtful—and completely free. It was a dream find and one that I’m still so thankful for. But this year? We’re moving into something new. We’re shifting our focus to physics.
Science Options for Next Year: Let’s Talk Physics
Yes, physics. But before you start imagining dry textbooks or overly complex equations, let me introduce a resource that totally flipped my mindset: Homeschool Physics with LEGOs by Edible Knowledge.
I first learned about Edible Knowledge at the Texas Homeschool Expo, and I was instantly intrigued. They had a booth full of creative science kits and curriculum—everything from forensic science to food chemistry—and what caught my eye was their physics course using LEGOs.
This set was designed by fellow LEGO lovers, and you can either purchase the whole set of required pieces or use the included list to source them yourself (we’ve done this with other custom LEGO builds—shoutout to the big guy in red for some very specific guinea pig models last Christmas). It’s completely doable, even if you’ve never done a custom order before.
Their site isn’t the fanciest (which, let’s be honest, is super common in the homeschool world), but the heart of the product is solid. This course includes:

Detailed workbook explanations of physics principles

Application-based learning that blends theory with tangible building

A fun, hands-on approach that sticks
This is exactly the kind of homeschool science option that gets me—and more importantly, my kids—excited about learning. It’s also a huge plus when I can hand off some of the independent work to my eighth grader while still engaging my fourth grader in the same content.
And the fact that it uses LEGOs for science? Honestly, that might be the best part.
What We Found (and What We Didn’t)
Now, when I tried clicking on the LEGO parts list to give you a better idea—of course, that didn’t work. But typically, they list each item with an official LEGO number so you can find and order the exact parts from LEGO’s site. You just have to be very meticulous about staying organized with your pieces and tracking what you need.
That got me thinking: I want this. I want LEGO physics.
So we started with Edible Knowledge and then I began googling. What else is out there?

Exploring Other LEGO Learning Options
I came across PhysicsOnline.com, which partners with Queen Mary University to offer instructions and lesson plans that involve building with LEGOs—like particle physics, vision and fusion explained with LEGOs. They even offer full lesson plans for teachers. Very cool, but not exactly what I was looking for. None of it was a full, thought-out curriculum.
Discovering LEGO Education
Then I found LEGO Education.
LEGO Education offers pre-K through middle school options. It’s geared toward schools, not homeschoolers, but the potential is huge. Their kits are aligned with educational standards for every state, and they include apps, teacher resources, blogs, and product support. So naturally, I started poking around.
There’s a whole section of teacher resources—videos, how-tos, professional development, product libraries, and more. I even requested a meeting (twice) to get more information about how this could work for homeschool. I got automated emails both times and… no follow-up. But that didn’t stop me.
The Middle School Science Kit
From the LEGO Education site, I went to the science section and selected middle school (which is where we are). There’s a new kit that’s set to ship in August 2025. Based on what I’ve read, this kit seems to be replacing one of their existing sets. Each kit is designed to serve four students, but in our homeschool, I have two students—so this works beautifully.
This middle school kit includes:

40 fully developed lessons covering life science, physical science, engineering and design, Earth and space science

A sturdy, stackable storage box

Motors, controllers, and everything you need

A teacher portal

Online standards-aligned lessons

Classroom-ready videos and notes
It follows the 5E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) and includes formative assessments, which I love. Even better—it lets you search by your state’s standards. For Texas, I clicked in and it clearly showed how the kit meets specific educational goals. All of this tells me it’s been very thoughtfully designed.
BUT—it’s not LEGO physics.
That’s where my heart sank a little. I really wanted LEGO physics.

Enter: Spike Prime and Brick Q Motion Prime
So we kept looking and discovered the LEGO Education Spike Prime set under their STEAM section. I picked the middle school option and found the Spike Prime kit—which includes:

Coding and problem-solving activities

Standards-aligned unit plans

Professional development options
There’s even a comparison chart between this and other kits. Plus, there’s another kit called the Brick Q Motion Prime set, which is more physics-focused. So naturally, now I want BOTH.
The Brick Q Motion Prime set only includes 10 lessons, but they’re beautifully done—things like designing a desktop helper or exploring engineering and physics principles. The Spike Prime set is more computer science and engineering-based.
And here’s the kicker—I saw a group of kids carrying the Spike Prime box at a robotics championship here in Houston. It was real. Tangible. And that made me so excited.
Why This Works for Us
You can download the LEGO Education Spike app on a tablet or use it in a browser (which is what we’ll likely do with our giant TV-as-a-computer setup). The app includes:

You can even dive deeper into language arts by having students research how smartwatches track steps and write explanations of the technology. It is SO COOL.
Where We’ve Landed
So, here’s where I’ve landed:

I’m likely purchasing both the Spike Prime set and the Brick Q Motion Prime set.

Yes, it’s expensive. Do I care? Nope. This is so exciting!

My kids are excited. I’m excited. My husband is even excited.

It’s not exactly LEGO physics—but it’s pretty darn close, and it opens up a world of science, engineering, coding, and creativity.
So while I didn’t quite find the standalone LEGO physics curriculum I had in mind, I’ve found something even better—a hands-on, standards-aligned, deeply engaging science and engineering platform we can use at home. I’ll keep you posted as we dive into this LEGO learning adventure!
