Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic! My name is Shanna, and if you’re new here, we’re a homeschooling family of four. We’re heading into our ninth year of homeschooling with an eighth grader and a fourth grader for the 2025–2026 school year, and I’m so excited to give you a peek at our brand new custom student planner setup.

This year feels fresh, different, and full of possibility. One of the biggest changes we’re making is how our kids stay on track. Instead of buying a ready-made option, I poured a lot of thought into designing a student planner setup that is flexible, simple, and something my kids will actually use.

Why We Needed a New Student Planner Setup

If you’ve been with us for a while, you know I thrive on routines and systems. In the past, our attempts at getting the kids into a planner routine always fizzled out. The problem was time-based layouts.

Filling in every subject at every time slot was overwhelming, and honestly, it made us less consistent. With two busy kids, one officially a teenager and the other in her last single digits, I knew we needed a planner that worked with us, not against us.

So, I scrapped the time-based system and started from scratch.

Our New Approach to Student Planner Setup

Here’s what makes this year’s student planner setup different:

Disc Binding for Flexibility – Everything is disc-bound so pages can easily come in and out. Want to add a book tracker? Done. Need more weekly spreads? Pop them in. It’s simple and customizable.
Week-at-a-Glance Layout – Instead of hourly blocks, each week fits on a single page in landscape format (8.5 x 11). It’s clean, uncluttered, and keeps the big picture front and center.
Monday Start – In our house Sunday still feels like part of the weekend. Monday is where the week actually begins.
Motivation and Habits – Each page includes space for a motivational quote or doodle plus a habit tracker. Whether it’s practicing piano or remembering to stretch, the kids can track what matters to them.
Curriculum and Book Trackers – This year we’re also including a curriculum progress tracker and a reading log. One kid wanted it, one didn’t, so we kept it loose and adaptable.

Supplies That Make It Work

Putting together this student planner setup doesn’t require a craft room full of tools. Here’s what we used:

Disc-binding hole punch
Assorted colored discs (each kid has their own color coding)
Heavier-weight paper (around 60–80 lb for durability)
Custom-designed pages printed double-sided on our new HP EcoTank printer
Coloring page covers for personalization
Cardstock backing for extra stability

It’s simple, intuitive, and far more affordable than many pre-made planners. Since it’s customizable, we can add or remove pages whenever we need.

Good Enough Is Good Enough

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through nine years of homeschooling is that good enough really is good enough. I spent so much time overthinking layouts, trackers, and designs, but at the end of the day, simplicity wins.

This student planner setup may not be the fanciest or the most rugged, but it’s good enough to get us started. Because it’s flexible, we can make changes as the year goes on.
