It’s that time again—Plan With Me 8th Grade! We’re officially heading into our ninth year of homeschooling, and this time it feels… different. We’re standing at the edge of high school, and I’m letting that reality fuel a more focused, flexible, and future-ready plan for our homeschool year.

Why I’m Not Doing an Hour-by-Hour Schedule Anymore
Let’s just be honest: the traditional “school bell” style schedule never worked for us. We tried it. It flopped. What works instead? A homeschool flow—a clear structure that keeps us moving through the week with purpose, but without the pressure of the clock.
For 8th grade, that means:

This isn’t just about getting through another homeschool year—it’s about preparing for high school, college, and whatever comes next.
Plan With Me 8th Grade: Our Flexible Flow
I’m planning in real-time, using my trusty colorful flow chart that lives right on the back of a clipboard. Here’s how I break it down:

Start with the big picture. I map out the full year—weeks in, breaks out.

Divide lessons by available weeks. (With buffer built in. Always buffer.)

Create a weekly flow instead of a daily schedule.

Prioritize group subjects (like Mom & Me Monday).

Fill in the rest based on individual goals and readiness.
We’re not locked into time slots—we’re following a rhythm. And that rhythm allows for both structure and flexibility, which is everything in a real homeschool life.
Big Changes for 8th Grade Homeschool Planning
This year, things are different—and that’s on purpose.
With some big life shifts last year and a possible move toward public school or magnet applications ahead, I’m planning with clarity and intention. I’ve already started:

Our homeschool portfolio and record keeping (for the first time before school starts!)

Prepping transcripts (hello, high school credit from Algebra 1!)

Creating a system that lets us focus on what really matters
Instead of piling on more, I’m giving my 8th grader fewer, more meaningful things. Because every subject she’s working on this year is deeper and more intense—SAT-level vocab, college-prep writing, interest-driven projects.
Less doing. More depth.
