Our Fall Cleaning Routine 2024: Keeping Our Home Organized and Cozy This Season

As the seasons change, I’m excited to dive into the changes we’ve made in our home, prioritizing a clean and organized environment to enjoy the cooler days. Why a Fall Cleaning Routine Matters
Since we parent, homeschool, and work from home, having an organized space is essential for keeping things running smoothly. Visual clutter impacts my mood, so maintaining a neat home environment is a top priority for our family. This fall, our focus is not only on cleaning but also decluttering, organizing, and ensuring that everything has a place.
Daily and Weekly Cleaning Themes
To streamline our cleaning, I’ve organized our tasks into daily themes that make it easy to stay consistent and get everyone involved:
- Make It Right Monday: This day is all about resetting after the weekend. We spend about 30 minutes tidying up, putting everything back in its place, and prepping for the week.
- Tinkle Sprinkle Tuesday: Tuesday is dedicated to bathroom cleaning, ensuring all counters and sinks are wiped down for a fresh start to the week.
- Wax On Wax Off Wednesday: We tackle dusting on Wednesdays, making sure all surfaces are wiped and dust-free.
- That’s Extra Thursday: Thursdays are for bigger, less frequent tasks, like cleaning the oven or tackling a long-ignored drawer.
- Forget About It Friday: This day is for the little things we often forget, like cleaning out the fridge or wiping down hidden spots.
- Floors on Friday: We end the week with a good floor cleaning, vacuuming, and mopping.
Our Family’s Laundry Routine
Laundry has its own dedicated day to keep it from piling up. We sort everything the night before, and with everyone pitching in, laundry runs throughout the day. By folding clothes together, we turn the task into a family activity, making it less of a chore and more enjoyable.
Tandem Cleaning – A New Family-Focused Approach
One of our newest additions to the fall cleaning routine is “tandem cleaning.” We pick one room, turn up the music, and dive into cleaning together, with everyone taking on different tasks within the same space. Tandem cleaning not only gets the job done faster but also makes cleaning more enjoyable for the entire family.
Kid Chores and Responsibility
Our kids each have their own chore charts that fit their age and responsibilities. This fall, we’ve updated the charts to make sure their tasks align with our weekly needs, balancing chores with their school obligations. We also reward them with an allowance when they complete their chores and offer bonuses for any extra work they do. Our goal is to teach them how to manage and maintain a home, building essential life skills early on.
Organizing for a Clean Fall Season
Decluttering is a big part of our fall cleaning routine. We’ve been working room by room, donating items we no longer use and ensuring everything has a designated spot. This reduces the time needed for daily cleaning and helps us avoid the stress of “picking up” before we can even begin actual cleaning. Keeping everything organized makes it easier to clean quickly and stay on top of the bigger tasks.
