Downsizing, Adjusting, and Embracing Change
One year after our big move, it’s clear just how much we gave up — and gained — in the process. We left our suburban home in Houston: a big yard, plenty of space, and separate bedrooms for everyone. In its place, we moved to a bustling city where our kids share a room, we downsized storage, and parking is… well, limited. We gave up certain comforts, and we faced challenges I didn’t anticipate: AC outages, roof repairs, remodeling, and figuring out how to fit our furniture into much smaller spaces.
The Surprising Joy of City Life
But one year after our big move, the joys have far outweighed the challenges. The convenience alone has transformed our daily life. No more hour-long commutes or planning every day around traffic. Theater, zoo trips, art classes, and family outings are now just minutes away. We walk everywhere. We ride bikes everywhere. The lifestyle shift has brought a closeness to our family that I didn’t know was possible.
Lessons Learned: Scary Doesn’t Mean Wrong
One year after our big move, I’ve learned that scary decisions can lead to the most magical outcomes. Moving against the norms, making choices that others questioned, and embracing uncertainty has reshaped our family life in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Downsizing, sharing space, and rethinking routines forced us to get creative, and it’s brought us closer together.
Our kids, too, have embraced this change. During Thanksgiving, they said the move was the thing they were most thankful for this year. That moment alone affirmed every difficult decision along the way.
