New Algebra 1 Review: A First Look at Math-U-See’s Principles of Secondary Mathematics

With a seventh grader and a third grader, we’re always on the lookout for the best resources to enrich our learning journey. Today, I’m sharing an early review of the new Algebra 1 curriculum from Math-U-See: Principles of Secondary Mathematics (PSM). This review is based on our initial weeks with the program, and while it’s not a final verdict, it will give you a clear idea of what to expect.

The New Math-U-See Algebra 1 Format
Math-U-See has been a staple in our homeschool, from Primer through to Algebra 1. Over the years, there’s been quite a bit of chatter about whether Math-U-See Algebra 1 adequately prepares students. Some have expressed concerns that it may not provide the best foundation. My speculation is that this led Math-U-See to introduce the Algebra 1 PSM, a revamped version designed to address these issues. I have also heard that they changed in an effort to comply with Common Core Standards to still be eligible for state fund purchasing.
The new Algebra 1 PSM features a distinct format: students work through a workbook in line with instructional videos, which is a shift from the previous model where videos and worksheets were separate. This integration aims to enhance comprehension and practice by having students engage with the material as they go along, rather than reviewing it separately.
Everything That We Are Using This Year
Week 1: Adjusting to the New Format
Our first week with Algebra 1 PSM was a bit rocky. We initially struggled with the new format and found the transition challenging. There were personal factors at play, and it didn’t help that math was scheduled late in the day. However, by the end of the week, things began to look up. We’re finding our rhythm and adapting to how we’ll use the program effectively.
For the second week, we’re planning to:
- Monday: Watch Part A Videos
- Tuesday: Do Practice Part A
- Wednesday: Watch Part B Videos
- Thursday: Do Practice Part B & Targeted Review
We’re hopeful this approach will streamline our learning and provide a better fit for our needs.
Week 2: Progress and Challenges
By the end of the second week, we noticed improvements. The initial rough patches were smoothing out, though there were still some bumps. Our optimism is intact, but we’re staying flexible. The program requires a bit of a learning curve, and we’re adapting as we go. I’m planning to continue evaluating our progress and may include insights from Week 3 to provide a more comprehensive review.
Week 3: Turning the Corner?
As we approach the middle of our third week, we’re starting to see a glimmer of progress. Despite some ongoing disruptions, I feel like we’re turning a corner. The new format, while different, shows potential. It’s been a tough transition, but the program’s structure seems to be growing on us.

- Student Workbooks A & B: These are used in tandem with the instructional videos.
- Tests Booklet: For evaluating progress.
- Formula Sheet: A handy reference for students.
Digital Toolbox:
- Interactive Lessons: Videos for each lesson segment, including Part A and B.
- Calculator Tools: Online scientific and graphing calculators.
- Additional Resources: Includes problem-solving tools and digital worksheets.
One critique is the lack of additional practice problems. While the program provides foundational practice, it would benefit from more variety and practice options.
Final Thoughts
This early review of Math-U-See Algebra 1 PSM highlights a promising, yet challenging start. The new format offers a fresh approach to learning algebra, but it may require some adjustments. By the end of Week 8, we’ll have a clearer picture of its effectiveness.
