Need To Know But Rarely Taught

Need To Know But Rarely Taught: The Big Missing Piece

We have so many incredible resources for grown-ups — planners, books, seminars, apps — all aimed at maximizing productivity, prioritizing tasks, and managing time. But when I search for “time management for kids,” all I seem to find are tips for adults managing kids — not kids managing themselves!

It’s crystal clear: essential life skills are Need To Know But Rarely Taught. I don’t want just a cute kids’ planner or a chore chart; I want real, lasting habits built on foundational skills like goal-setting, self-motivation, time-blocking, prioritization, and accountability. These are the life skills for kids that are going to matter so much as they grow.

And right now? They seem almost invisible.

Important Life Lessons That Kids Need To Know But Are Rarely Taught

Let’s get real about what falls under the umbrella of Need To Know But Rarely Taught:

  • How to manage a planner — not just decorate it.

  • How to prioritize tasks — not just make a to-do list.

  • How to use time-blocking to structure a day.

  • How to practice self-discipline and perseverance when the going gets tough.

  • How to recognize the value of delayed gratification.

  • How to use simple strategies like the Eisenhower Matrix or Pomodoro Technique to get work done.

These things matter.
These skills are so valuable.
And they are shockingly absent from the typical childhood curriculum.

Sure, my kids can find a thousand fun cooking classes or DIY projects aimed at “teaching independence,” but where’s the solid foundation of life skills kids actually need?

Are Life Skills Only Found in Religious Resources?

One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of what does exist in the “life skills for kids” space tends to come bundled with religious or faith-based lessons. Now, no shade — there’s absolutely a place for that. But for families like mine, who are looking for secular life skills resources, it gets tricky fast.

Teaching my kids to be good humans doesn’t have to come from a fear of divine punishment — and neither should their life skills education. I want affirmations, strategies, practical advice, and proven methods — not a sermon.

Need To Know But Rarely Taught life skills should be available to every kid, regardless of religious background.

Help Me Find It: Collaboration Needed!

This is where I need your help.
Is there a magical resource out there that I just haven’t found yet? Is there a more specific life skills “Seven Habits of Highly Effective Kids” that I somehow missed?
Something like Snoop Dogg’s Affirmations app — but geared for life success for kids, minus the adult-only language?

Because here’s the thing:
If I could find a Need To Know But Rarely Taught curriculum or resource for kids — something secular, engaging, practical, and smart — I would grab it in a heartbeat.

I am actively searching for:

  • Life skills programs for kids

  • Productivity tools for kids

  • Time management skills for kids

  • Self-help resources for middle schoolers

  • Motivational strategies for kids

And if it doesn’t exist yet… maybe it’s time to create it?

Why This Matters So Much

The life skills that fall into the Need To Know But Rarely Taught category are not fluff. They are game-changers.
When my life feels chaotic, I fall back on structure, systems, and intentional habits. I want my kids to have the same safety net.

They are already navigating schedules, deadlines, and big emotions.
They are already building habits that will either help or hinder their success later.
They need tools. They need strategies.
They need Need To Know But Rarely Taught lessons — now.

As a homeschool family, I have the freedom (and responsibility) to make sure my kids are learning these life skills alongside academics. But wow, it would be nice if there were ready-made resources to help.

What I’m Hoping For

I’m dreaming of:

  • Habit-building programs for kids

  • Productivity systems made kid-friendly

  • Lessons on how to prioritize, plan, and persevere

  • Mindset coaching that’s age-appropriate

  • Real-life skills that will serve them forever

Need To Know But Rarely Taught isn’t just a catchy phrase — it’s a mission.
And if we can’t find it… maybe we build it.
