Mid-Year Update: Reflecting on Our Homeschool Journey
As we hit the halfway mark in the 2024-2025 school year, it’s time for a mid-year update! This year has been anything but routine, and I want to share the highs, the challenges, and everything in between as we reflect on our homeschool journey so far.
Homeschooling is all about embracing flexibility, and this year has put that philosophy to the test like never before. After eight years of homeschooling, I’m used to having a clear plan and sticking to it. However, this year has been a whirlwind of disruptions and unexpected challenges, starting with a pipe break back in May that threw off our sense of routine.
From personal commitments to shifting priorities, this fall semester has been “other” — a word I’ve come to use often to describe how things feel right now. It’s not bad, but it’s definitely not the predictable rhythm we’re used to. Let’s dive into the details.

Homeschool Adjustments and Curriculum Shifts
One of the biggest changes this year has been a mid-year curriculum switch. For the first time in our homeschooling journey, we dropped a major subject midstream and replaced it with something new. It’s been a learning experience for all of us, but it’s also a testament to the importance of finding the right fit for your homeschool.
While some subjects, like math and language arts for my third grader, are on track, others are not where I expected them to be. We’re behind on some programs, but that’s okay. Homeschooling isn’t about rigid schedules; it’s about making progress in a way that works for your family. This year, we’ve had to lean into that flexibility more than ever.
Flexing Our Flexibility
Homeschooling offers the unique gift of flexibility, and this year we’ve truly needed it. Between personal commitments and the end-of-year busyness, our homeschool routine has taken a backseat. Despite being behind where I thought we’d be, I know we’re still on the right path because homeschooling allows us to adapt and adjust.
From managing my eldest’s commitments to keeping up with the basics like multiplication facts, we’re making it work. Sometimes, taking a step back and focusing on what truly matters is the best course of action.

Lessons in Letting Go
This year has taught me an important lesson about control—or rather, the lack of it. Life is unpredictable, and even the best-laid plans can go awry. Instead of stressing over what we haven’t accomplished, I’m focusing on what we have achieved and trusting that we’ll finish the year strong.
Looking ahead, I’ll be diving into more in-depth planning for the spring semester. There’s plenty to sort out, from curriculum pacing to daily schedules, but I’m confident we’ll get back on track. After all, homeschooling is a marathon, not a sprint.
A Word for the Year: “Other”
If I had to sum up this year in one word, it would be “other.” It’s been different, unexpected, and challenging, but also a reminder of why we homeschool in the first place. The ability to pivot, adapt, and focus on what truly matters is a privilege I don’t take for granted.

As we prepare for the second half of the school year, I’m grateful for the lessons we’ve learned and the progress we’ve made, even if it doesn’t look exactly how I envisioned it. Homeschooling is a journey, and every twist and turn is an opportunity for growth.
Are you feeling this too? If you had to describe your year so far in one word, what would it be? Drop your thoughts in the comments—I’d love to hear from you.
Here’s to embracing the journey and finding joy in the “other.” Happy homeschooling!
