Math for 3rd Update: Our Experience with Math-U-See Delta
Welcome to Making Everyday Magic! If you’re new here, we are a homeschooling family of four currently in our eighth year of homeschooling. This year, we are tackling the 2024–2025 school year with a 7th grader and a 3rd grader. Today, I’m excited to share our experience with Math-U-See Delta—a fantastic program that’s been working wonders for our 3rd-grade math curriculum.

Why Math-U-See Delta?
Math-U-See Delta is a mastery-based curriculum focused on division. My daughter has been thriving with this approach, which introduces concepts step by step, building a solid foundation in one area before moving to the next. Last year, she mastered multiplication with Math-U-See Gamma, and this year, Delta has taken her division skills to the next level.
This program is broken into 30 lessons, with each lesson designed to be thorough yet approachable. We usually split the curriculum into two halves, completing one in the fall and the other in the spring. The combination of hands-on manipulatives, engaging lessons, and a focus on real-world applications makes this a standout choice for us.

How We Use Math-U-See Delta

- Monday: Watch the lesson video and complete the “Lesson Practice” worksheet (A).
- Tuesday: Skip to the “Systematic Review” worksheet (C) if Monday went well.
- Wednesday: Move on to another review worksheet (D or F), depending on progress.
- Thursday: Wrap up with one more review worksheet or enrichment activity.
We skip lesson tests but use the unit tests to measure overall progress. This schedule allows us to balance reinforcement with moving forward, ensuring my child stays engaged and confident.
What Makes Math-U-See Delta Effective?
Math-U-See Delta’s mastery-based approach shines because it doesn’t overwhelm students with multiple new concepts at once. Instead, it focuses on:
- Building confidence in division, from single-digit to multi-digit problems.
- Incorporating word problems to enhance real-world application skills.
- Offering flexibility in practice with enrichment activities, like coloring pages, for fun reinforcement.
Additionally, the program’s hands-on manipulatives and digital tools, such as the virtual integer blocks, provide visual and interactive ways to understand concepts.
A Personal Touch
One of the reasons we love Math-U-See Delta is that it aligns with our homeschooling philosophy. My daughter operates slightly ahead of her grade level, and this curriculum meets her where she is. While I encourage reinforcement through tools like Times Tales, Schoolhouse Rock, and Prodigy Math Game, I don’t stress memorization. I believe in allowing her to develop a natural understanding of math at her own pace.
