The Assumption We Need to Break
There’s this assumption that if you homeschool, you must be against public school.
I’m not.
Not even a little bit.
Our Background
Both my husband and I are products of public school.
We had great experiences.
We learned. We thrived.
Public school did exactly what it was supposed to do—for us.
Why We Chose Homeschooling
As our child grew, it became clear:
The best education isn’t one-size-fits-all.
It’s tailored.
And for our learner, homeschooling allowed us to:
- move at the right pace
- lean into strengths
- adjust when needed
That’s why we chose it.
What Public Schools Do Well
Public schools:
- provide structure and access
- support families with childcare and meals
- create opportunity where it might not otherwise exist
- serve as a safety net for many children
That matters.
A lot.
Where the System Struggles
There are real challenges:
- overregulation
- standardized testing pressure
- funding tied to performance metrics
- lack of flexibility for individual learners
These aren’t teacher problems.
They’re system problems.
Why I’m Still Pro Public School
Because as a whole, public education serves society.
It creates access.
It builds foundations.
It supports families.
And I don’t believe we should tear that down.
The Real Takeaway
Homeschooling isn’t “better.”
Public school isn’t “worse.”
The best education is the one that works for your child.
Conclusion
I’m pro public school.
And I homeschool anyway.
Because both can be true.
