How We Homeschool Start Our Week | Mom and Me Monday
Welcome to Making Everyday Magic! I’m Shanna, and we are a homeschooling family of four currently in our eighth year of this amazing journey. We’re navigating seventh grade with my oldest and third grade with my youngest, and today, I’m thrilled to share how we homeschool and start our week with Mom and Me Monday—a day that has become the cornerstone of our homeschooling routine.

Why Mom and Me Monday Works for Us
Mom and Me Monday is more than just a fun name—it’s the day we lay the foundation for our entire week. As a homeschooling mom who also works from home, I’ve found it crucial to dedicate time on Mondays to tackle everything that needs my active involvement. This focused time ensures that the rest of our week flows smoothly and efficiently.
Here’s how we make it happen:
- We combine subjects whenever possible.
Subjects like history, science, and unit studies are perfect for teaching both of my kids together. While they might have different output expectations based on their grade levels, combining the lessons reduces my workload and increases engagement. - We prioritize bigger tasks early.
Mondays are dedicated to tackling the most complex or time-intensive subjects like Texas History, Chemistry, and Dino 101. Starting the week with these “big bites” means we can ease into lighter, independent work as the week progresses. - We embrace teamwork.
On Mom and Me Monday, we work together from start to finish, fostering collaboration and making the learning experience more enjoyable for everyone.
A Peek into Our Mom and Me Monday
Our Mondays begin earlier than usual, with the kids diving into a video lesson as their first task. From there, we transition into our shared subjects:
- Tech Essentials – Both kids work through their digital curriculum with minimal guidance.
- Dino 101 – A shared favorite that includes fascinating lessons and unique activities like digital fossil exploration.
- Chemistry – Using a periodic table game and flashcards, we explore elements and their properties together.
- Texas History – A mix of reading, discussion, and planning field trips to reinforce learning.
After we’ve wrapped up our shared subjects, the kids move on to independent math lessons. My seventh grader works through her Denison Algebra, while my third grader tackles Math-U-See Delta, with me offering support where needed.

The Benefits of Starting the Week Strong
Starting our week with Mom and Me Monday has been a game-changer. It allows us to:
- Stay ahead: By addressing the most challenging tasks on Monday, the rest of the week feels lighter and more manageable.
- Build momentum: A productive start sets the tone for the week, keeping everyone motivated.
- Adapt easily: As the holiday season approaches, this routine helps us adjust our workload and maintain consistency.
Why We Love Mom and Me Monday
For me, Mondays have always been pivotal. Whether it was during my hairstyling days or now as a homeschooling mom, a strong start to the week makes all the difference. My kids and I genuinely look forward to this dedicated time together—it’s productive, enjoyable, and ensures we’re setting ourselves up for success.
