Homeschool Planning in Uncertain Times: Why I’m Buying Less This Year

I started noticing something this spring.

Every time I felt unsure—about homeschooling, about life, about my home—I found myself looking for something to buy.

A workbook.

A planner.

A curriculum.

A solution.

And the strange thing is that I don’t think any of those purchases were solving the thing I thought they were solving.

We’re heading into our tenth year of homeschooling.

Normally, this is the season where I’m deep in planning mode.

Researching.

Comparing.

Building lists.

Thinking about possibilities.

But this year has felt different.

Maybe it’s because the world feels different.

Maybe it’s because we’re carrying different things than we were a few years ago.

Maybe it’s because after ten years, experience changes the way you look at things.

Whatever the reason, I’ve found myself approaching homeschool planning with far more hesitation than excitement.

Not in a bad way.

In a thoughtful way.

When More Starts Feeling Like Noise

One of the things I love about homeschooling is the sheer number of possibilities.

There are beautiful curriculum options.

Creative resources.

Interesting approaches.

Endless opportunities to customize an education.

But I’ve also noticed that freedom can quietly turn into pressure.

Because when there are thousands of options, it’s easy to believe the answer must be somewhere outside of you.

Somewhere in the next curriculum.

The next system.

The next purchase.

The next thing.

I know that feeling because I’ve lived it.

What I Actually Wanted Was Certainty

The longer I sat with it, the more I realized I wasn’t necessarily shopping for curriculum.

I was shopping for certainty.

I wanted reassurance.

I wanted confirmation.

I wanted to know I was making the right decisions.

And buying something often creates the temporary feeling that you’ve solved a problem.

Even when the problem wasn’t really about curriculum in the first place.

The Older My Homeschool Gets…

The older my homeschool gets, the less interested I am in chasing something new simply because it’s new.

I’m much more interested in asking:

What already works?

What do my kids actually enjoy?

What have we consistently returned to year after year?

What is serving our family right now?

Not five years ago.

Not someone else’s family.

Not what is trending.

Right now.

Cost Isn’t the Only Consideration

One thing I’ve talked about for years is that homeschooling does not have to be expensive.

I believe that deeply.

There are incredible free resources available.

Entire homeschool years can be built using free and low-cost options.

But lately I’ve realized that money isn’t the only resource that matters.

Space matters.

Energy matters.

Attention matters.

Mental load matters.

Every item that comes into our home asks something of us.

Storage.

Organization.

Maintenance.

Decision-making.

And after downsizing, that reality feels impossible to ignore.

Maybe This Season Is About Trust

What if this season isn’t asking me to find something better?

What if it’s asking me to trust what I’ve already learned?

Ten years of homeschooling has taught me a lot.

Not because I’ve figured everything out.

But because experience has a way of revealing what actually matters.

Relationships matter.

Consistency matters.

Curiosity matters.

The feeling of safety and connection inside a home matters.

Most of the things that matter most cannot be purchased.

Going Into This Year

So yes, I’ve bought less this year.

Far less than I normally would.

Not because we’re doing less.

Not because I care less.

Not because homeschooling matters less.

But because I’m trying to make decisions from a place of peace instead of uncertainty.

And right now, that feels like enough.

I’m curious if you’re feeling this too.

Are you finding yourself simplifying?

Doubling down on what already works?

Being more intentional about what comes into your home?

Or does this season feel completely different for you?

I’d genuinely love to know.
