What Really Happens on the First Day of School at Home
Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic! Today we’re diving into the excitement, routines, and little moments that make the first day of school special in our homeschool. We’re kicking off the 2025–2026 school year with an eighth grader and a fourth grader, officially starting our ninth year of homeschooling, and I can’t wait to share what a day in our home education looks like.

Morning Kickoff
The first day of school always starts with a little extra excitement. My kids got up early, made breakfast, and settled into our home learning space, also known as the living room. We began the day with a short news recap through CNN 10 to catch up on summer events and spark conversation. Starting the day with a calm, informative activity helps set the tone for a smooth first day of school.
We also kicked off Mom and Me Monday, a simple way to ease into our week while incorporating family time. This year, we’ve added small touches that make the first day feel festive, like a signature scent and the presence of our resident (stuffed) pets, which always bring extra joy to the morning.
A Look at Our Homeschool Day
Our first day of school included a mix of guided learning, independent work, and hands-on activities:

Art and History – We use a combination of art history curriculum and journaling. Each child fills out guided worksheets while exploring new content.

Geography – Using Crash Course Geography, the kids track key points and practice note-taking. Adjustments were needed for different developmental levels, but the system works well overall.

Math – Both kids started their math lessons. The fourth grader revisited fractions while the eighth grader reviewed Algebra 1 concepts. We’re keeping manipulatives on hand for support until confidence grows.

Vocabulary – Introductions and first-week exercises helped everyone get acclimated to the new year’s learning pace.
We also incorporated daily reads like Animal A Day, which gives a quick, fun fact every morning. It’s a simple way to add enrichment and start a habit of curiosity.

Hands-On Learning and Play
Science got a hands-on boost with Lego Science activities. The kids explored programming, created characters, and experimented with sensors. Watching them take over the lessons themselves was one of the highlights of our first day of school.
Even small household helpers like our robot vacuum, nicknamed Wall-E, add a touch of fun to the day. These playful elements keep learning lighthearted while still focused.

By the end of the day, the kids had completed their lessons, explored creative activities, and settled into our homeschool rhythm. Key takeaways from our first day of school include:

Our eighth grader and fourth grader ended the day feeling accomplished and excited for the next day of homeschool.
Homeschooling allows us to make every first day of school unique, intentional, and full of joy. Every year feels fresh, and this year is no exception. By the time the day wrapped up, it was clear that our routines, activities, and small touches had made a meaningful difference.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow we’ll continue with our core lessons, diving deeper into subjects like Black American History and daily enrichment activities. Each day builds on the last, and the first day of school serves as a fun, manageable kickoff.
