Finding high-quality free homeschool resources can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. You want lessons that are engaging, secular, and worth your time, but you don’t want to spend hours scrolling or paywalls getting in the way. Let’s fix that. Finding Free Homeschool Resources That Actually Work
When I need something for our homeschool, like a new unit, subject, or grade-specific supplement, I never start by searching homeschool. It sounds backwards, but leaving that word out opens the door to so many more free resources. Instead, I search for grade level, subject, and the word free. This keeps my results focused on what actually matters: solid educational content you can use right away.
Take first-grade Spanish, for example. Within minutes, I found complete free homeschool resources covering colors, numbers, greetings, and songs. Many of them are even linked to printable worksheets and interactive activities. The same goes for fourth and fifth-grade writing organizers, simple graphic organizers, story maps, and persuasive writing tools that teachers use in classrooms every day.
The secret isn’t fancy. It’s knowing where and how to look.
Free Homeschool Geography and Science
Some of my favorite finds come from places like Core Knowledge, which offers free, open-access curriculum for multiple grades and subjects. For fourth-grade geography, they provide complete lesson sequences and maps that make it easy to explore the world without spending a dime. Freedom Homeschooling also compiles secular-friendly resources from around the web, so it’s worth a look if you like having everything in one place.
When it comes to science, the options get even better. Science Buddies, Khan Academy, and Smithsonian Learning Lab are all incredible sources for hands-on experiments, open-and-go lesson plans, and free homeschool science curriculum that can carry you through an entire year.
Free Homeschool for High Schoolers
Finding free high school resources doesn’t have to mean sacrificing quality. Sites like CK-12, OpenStax, and Saylor Academy offer complete high school-level courses in biology, chemistry, world geography, and more. You can even find free electives and technology programs, like coding, Python tutorials, and digital design, through Code.org and MIT OpenCourseWare.
These programs are self-paced, flexible, and perfect for independent learners. Plus, they help you introduce new skills without paying for expensive online classes.
