For us, homeschool organization isn’t about perfection—it’s about making sure the year starts smoothly. Since moving into a new house with even less space, we’ve had to rethink our homeschool setup to make the most of every inch.
Homeschool Prep: Getting Ready for the Year
Here’s what our back-to-school homeschool prep looks like:
1. Cleaning and Resetting the Space
I can’t start a new homeschool year in a messy house. Tidying up before diving into curriculum prep clears my head and helps me focus.
2. Printing and Prepping Materials
This year was my first time doing large-scale homeschool printing. I compiled resources from Teachers Pay Teachers into custom workbooks for both kids. Instead of loose worksheets everywhere, I combined them into organized disc-bound workbooks—easy to add to, remove from, and reuse year after year.
3. Tech Setup
We made sure all apps were ready on the tablet and computer, especially for programs like our Lego Science Kits. Getting tech organized ahead of time saves mid-lesson headaches later.
Space-Saving Homeschool Organization
When you’re homeschooling in a small space, every inch counts. Here are some strategies that work for us:

Rolling carts: Each child has a school cart with their personal supplies. They can wheel it to wherever they’re working and tuck it away when not in use.

Color coding: Workbooks and materials are color-coded so everyone knows what belongs to whom.

Managing curriculum for two kids at different levels can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down helps:

Instructor materials stay in one spot so I can quickly grab what I need for read-alouds or teacher-led lessons.

Student bins hold grade-specific books and resources, making it easy for each child to work independently.

Family subjects (like art history and read-alouds) are stored separately, so we can pull them out when it’s time to work together.
