2025 Homeschool Reality and What Is Working for Us Now
This is the point in the year where I always pause and take a breath.
Midyear has a way of showing you the truth. What is working. What feels heavy. What needs adjusting. This Year in Review is not about perfection. It is about honesty, clarity, and setting ourselves up for a strong and steady finish to the homeschool year.
We are a homeschooling family of four, currently in our ninth year of homeschooling, and this homeschool year in review feels especially meaningful. There has been a lot of growth, a lot of learning, and a noticeable shift toward calm and sustainability.
So let us talk about what this Year in Review actually looks like in real life.

A Midyear Homeschool Year In Review Perspective
We are approaching the midpoint of the school year and wrapping up our calendar year learning before a short break. This is the season where I evaluate how things feel in our home, not just academically but emotionally and practically too.
This Year in Review is less about curriculum lists and more about how our days are flowing, how our kids are growing, and whether our homeschool is serving our family well.
Overall, things feel steady. Grounded. Calm in a way that did not exist this time last year.
What Is Working for My Oldest
One of the biggest highlights in this Year in Review has been the growth I am seeing in my oldest.
Her writing has reached a new level this year. She is working through structured, multi-page essays with confidence and depth. We intentionally broke the year into manageable writing chunks so she has time to read, think, draft, revise, and grow without pressure.
Her first major paper focused on a single source and explored how language can anchor a reader even when a story moves through time and imagination. Watching her develop that argument was incredibly rewarding.
Her second paper expands into multiple sources and explores historical influence and social impact. The level of thinking she is doing now shows me that the pacing we chose was the right one.
In math, geometry has been a solid win. Progress is consistent, and confidence is growing, which matters more to me than speed. This Year in Review also marks the point where I am beginning to think more intentionally about high school planning and what the next few years might look like.
Nothing needs to be decided yet, but awareness matters.
What Is Working for My Younger Student
My younger student is thriving in her own way.
She is moving steadily through math and approaching unit tests with confidence. Vocabulary has become something she gets genuinely excited about, especially when she recognizes big words in everyday life.
Writing has been focused on strong paragraph development, and that foundation is paying off. This Year in Review confirms for me that delayed and intentional writing instruction continues to be the right choice for our family.
Critical thinking has also been a highlight. Problem solving, logic, and puzzle-based learning have been engaging and successful, which tells me we are meeting her where she is right now.
Adjustments and Questions That Came Up This Year
A good homeschool year in review always includes questions.
One area I am reconsidering is spelling. Both kids have a strong foundation, but speed and application sometimes lag when writing freely. That tells me reinforcement might be helpful, even if it looks different than traditional spelling programs.
History has also been an area of reflection. While our current approach has been valuable, I am listening closely to feedback and considering adjustments that better fit learning preferences, including how and where learning happens.
This Year in Review reminds me that flexibility is not a weakness. It is one of the biggest strengths of homeschooling.
Life Outside Academics Matters Too
One of the most important parts of this Year in Review has nothing to do with schoolwork.
Our family life feels calmer. Stronger. More connected.
A major change this year has dramatically reduced the time spent rushing and commuting, and the impact has been noticeable. Our days feel more balanced. Our kids have more space to pursue their interests. Our home feels settled in a way it did not before.
This time last year, we were pushing through. White knuckling the season. This year feels different. Lighter. More intentional.
That matters.
Personal Growth and Looking Ahead
This Year in Review has also brought some personal clarity for me.
I am learning to show up imperfectly and share more consistently without waiting for everything to be polished. Connection matters more than perfection, and that is something I am carrying forward into the next year.
I am also feeling a strong pull toward building deeper community and connection. What that looks like is still forming, but the intention is there and it feels important.
Growth does not always come with a clear plan. Sometimes it starts with simply noticing what matters.
Closing Thoughts on This Year In Review
This Year in Review leaves me feeling grateful.
Grateful for growth. Grateful for calm. Grateful for the ability to adjust and realign when needed.
School is good. Life is good. And the path forward feels steady.
That is more than enough.
