Summer Systems Save The Day: Keeping Your Home Running Smoothly

Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic! My name is Shanna, and if you’re new here, we’re a homeschooling family of four, entering our eighth year of homeschooling with a seventh grader and a third grader. Today, I’m excited to share how summer systems save the day and keep our home running smoothly, even during the chaotic summer months.

Summer Systems Save The Day

Why Systems Matter

If you’re like me, you work hard throughout the year to ensure your home runs like a well-oiled machine. Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean we let things go off the rails. Here’s how our summer systems help maintain order and sanity.

1. Clear Expectations

One of the key elements of our summer system is setting clear expectations. Everyone in our home knows what to expect daily. Chores, a bit of learning, and time for mom to get some work done are all part of the routine. Clear expectations make our lives smoother, regardless of the season.

2. Prepped & Ready: Charts & Menus

Being prepared is essential. I have our summer bags ready for quick trips to the pool, and everything is packed for longer road trips. Each child has laminated chore charts and daily responsibilities checklists. These help keep them on track and ensure they know what’s expected of them.

3. Boredom Busters

We have a variety of activities ready to combat boredom. Art supplies, approved TV shows, fun games, and educational apps like Prodigy are all easily accessible. These activities keep their minds engaged and ready for learning, even during summer.

4. Bonus Bucks

This summer, we’ve introduced bonus bucks. This system allows my kids to earn extra money by helping out around the house. From cooking dinner to cleaning toilets, they earn money for various tasks. This not only gives them a sense of responsibility but also helps me manage my workload more efficiently.

5. More Fun

By having systems in place, we free up more time for fun. When chores are caught up and responsibilities are clear, we can plan more outings, like trips to the zoo or water park. This consistency ensures we all get to enjoy more of the summer fun together.

Meal Systems

Our meal planning system also carries through into summer. We keep a rotation of easy-to-pack lunches and snacks, ensuring we’re always ready for a day out. This planning helps us stay on track and ensures everyone knows what to expect at mealtimes.

Summer Systems Save The Day

These are the systems that help save the day in our home during summer. From clear expectations and chore charts to boredom busters and bonus bucks, these routines keep everything running smoothly despite the summer chaos.

I’d love to hear from you! What do you do in the summer to keep everyone on track? Do you lighten the chore load or add more structure? Share your ideas in the comments below.
