Revolutionizing Our Spelling Journey: All About Spelling Level 4 📚
Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic! We’re a homeschooling family of four entering our sixth year of this wonderful journey. I’m thrilled to share a significant turning point in our homeschooling adventure – our spelling has turned around.

Our Spelling Odyssey
Our spelling journey had its share of rough waters. We began with a conventional 10-word list approach and then discovered Timberdoodle, which introduced us to Spelling You See. However, our spelling struggles persisted. There was a clear gap between rote memorization and practical application.
The All About Spelling Revolution
But then, we made a significant change. We embraced All About Spelling, which focuses on a multi-sensory phonetic approach. The program introduces phonograms, the sounds they make, and the rules behind them. This approach turned out to be a game-changer for us.

Why It Works
The All About Spelling program provided the missing link. Here’s why it’s been so effective:
1. Phonogram Foundation: It delves deep into phonograms and their applications. We learned when to use ‘C’ or ‘K,’ why ‘C’ and ‘G’ could be soft or hard, and so much more.
2. Practical Application: It’s not about memorizing a list for a week. Instead, the program focuses on applying the rules learned.
3. Flexibility: We can adapt the program’s pace to our child’s confidence and needs. Since my girl is older and wants to move a bit faster, we are able to more easily adapt to suit her current needs.
Our Spelling Adventure
We started with All About Spelling Level 1, even though it seemed below our then-fourth-grader’s level. We paced through it faster and currently, she’s thriving in Level 4. As she masters each level, her spelling confidence grows, and we can see tangible results.
The Advanced Levels
Since she’s been zipping through the levels, we’re likely to progress to Level 5 over Christmas break. The program has a total of seven or eight levels, so we’re likely to have just one more year of using it. With this approach, I am more than content.
Multi-Sensory Learning
All About Spelling combines various learning methods. It includes word lists, flashcards, and even a letter tile app for a well-rounded experience. This multi-sensory aspect enhances understanding and application.
Why We’re Loving It
Now that our spelling struggles have been resolved, we couldn’t be happier with All About Spelling. It’s proven to be the right fit for our kids. We’ll continue to use it for our younger child as she progresses through the last level of All About Reading. The combined approach of these two programs has truly transformed our spelling abilities.
Digital Spelling Tiles
For the longest time, we used magnetic tiles. However, we later switched to the Digital Spelling Tiles app. It’s incredibly convenient and offers sound guidance on pronunciation. The app is a fantastic addition to our homeschooling toolkit.

One of the standout features of All About Spelling is its adaptability. You can customize the lessons to suit your child’s level, and you can add more challenging words as they progress. This adaptability makes it an invaluable asset for homeschooling families.
As our older child quickly moves through the levels, we’re exploring more complex words and syllables. We have been using the words in sentences to up the challenge. All About Spelling is not just about spelling; it’s about deep-rooted learning.

All About Spelling has made an incredible difference in our homeschooling. We now have a solid grasp of spelling. No more memorization followed by forgetfulness; it’s about understanding the rules. I’m grateful to Timberdoodle for introducing this option to us.
