If you’re wondering whether this program is worth the cost, how it actually works in a real homeschool, or if it’s only for “gifted” kids, I’ve got you covered.

We’ve completed earlier levels (The Poodle and The Island) and my older child has already finished through Level 5, so I’ve seen how the program grows and builds. What is Michael Clay Thompson’s Language Arts Curriculum?
The MCT Language Arts program is published exclusively by Royal Fireworks Press and is designed as a full language arts curriculum. Each level includes:

MCT is marketed as “Language Arts for Gifted and Talented Students.” But here’s the truth: while it’s written in a style that works beautifully for gifted learners, any child can use it. The strength of this program lies in its discussion-based, narrative approach that makes language come alive.
Our Experience with MCT Level 2: The Town Level
If you’re looking at MCT Level 2 and thinking, “Wow, that’s a LOT of books,” you’re right. It can feel overwhelming. But once you understand the rhythm, it’s manageable—and honestly, magical.
Here’s how we use it in our homeschool:

Start with Grammar Town + Caesar’s English. These run side by side. Grammar introduces sentence analysis (not just diagramming) and Caesar’s English builds rich vocabulary with roots, stems, and classic words.

Move into Paragraph Town. Once grammar is established, Paragraph Town helps kids understand structure, flow, and what makes good writing.

Layer in Practice Town. One sentence a day for analysis—short, sweet, and powerful.

Enjoy the Literature. In Level 2, we get our first real taste of classics with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Wind in the Willows, and Peter Pan. The annotated editions make a huge difference, with vocabulary support and sentence breakdowns right on the page.

Finish with Poetics. This introduces the beauty of sound, rhythm, and form in poetry—an area so often skipped in traditional programs.
For us, this flow keeps it simple without the pressure to “do it all.”
Is MCT Level 2 Worth the Price?
Let’s be real: MCT is expensive. The complete set comes with multiple books, and when you’re homeschooling multiple kids, the cost adds up fast. But here’s why I still think it’s worth it:

Longevity – Many of the books can be reused, especially instructor guides and non-consumables.

Depth – This isn’t busywork. It builds critical thinking, appreciation for language, and confidence in writing.

Flexibility – The author himself says you’re not meant to use everything. Pick what works for your child and leave the rest.

High Resale Value – If you’re done with a level, these sets sell quickly and retain strong value.
For us, the value outweighs the sticker shock.
Who Should Use MCT Level 2?

Kids ready for more advanced vocabulary, literature, and writing structure (typically around grades 4–5).

And no—you do not need a “gifted” child to use this curriculum. You just need a willingness to approach language arts differently.
Final Thoughts: Why We Love MCT
MCT Level 2 (The Town Level) has been a perfect fit for our fourth grade homeschool year. Yes, it’s a lot of books. Yes, it’s pricey. But the depth, creativity, and beauty of the language arts program keep us coming back.
If you’re intimidated, remember this: you do not have to use it all. You get to make it work for your family. That’s the beauty of homeschool, and that’s why MCT Level 2 continues to be one of my favorite investments in our homeschool journey.
