Welcome back, everyone! It’s Shanna, and today I’m thrilled to dive into the world of introductory grammar for elementary students. Why Poodle?

First things first, why Poodle? Well, besides the adorable imagery it conjures, the Poodle series is the newest offering in the Michael Clay Thompson language arts curriculum. With a focus on foundational grammar skills, it’s designed to transition young learners from simply reading to understanding the mechanics of language.

Key Features of the Poodle Series

Now, let’s break down what makes the Poodle series stand out. Comprising five student books and five instructor manuals, it’s a comprehensive package aimed at building a solid grammatical foundation. Each book covers essential topics, starting from identifying parts of speech to mastering the proper use of punctuation like commas.

Engaging Narrative Approach

One of the highlights of the Poodle series is its narrative approach. Through the adventures of a character named Poodle, students are taken on a journey through the intricacies of language. While some may find the narrative style unconventional, we’ve found it engaging and effective in our homeschooling environment.

Adaptability and Value

One aspect that sets the Poodle series apart is its adaptability. Whether your child is just starting to grasp the basics or ready to tackle more complex concepts, the series caters to various learning levels. Plus, the colorful illustrations and interactive exercises make learning grammar a fun and immersive experience.

But let’s address the elephant in the room: the cost. At $300 for the complete package, some may balk at the price tag. However, when you break it down, it’s only $30 per bookβ€”a reasonable investment for quality educational material. I find the value of the Poodle series undeniable, especially considering the solid foundation it provides for future language learning and continuing with the MCT language arts program.

Our Homeschooling Routine

Now, let’s talk about how we’ve been using the Poodle series in our homeschooling routine. By reading the chapter on Mondays and daily exercises throughout the week, we’ve found a rhythm that works for us. By dedicating just a small portion of our time each day to grammar, we’re able to make steady progress without overwhelming our young learners. We have completed 1 chapter a week to finish within our planned school year.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue our journey with the Michael Clay Thompson curriculum. Next year, we’ll be diving into the Island level, building upon the foundational skills laid out in the Poodle series. We remain steadfast in our commitment to providing the best possible education for our children.
