Homeschool Moms Quick Chat | Collaboration with Secular Homeschool Moms

Welcome to our latest homeschool mom quick chat! It’s time for a quick catch-up. I’m Shanna from Making Everyday Magic. If you’re new here, we’re a homeschooling family of four entering our eighth year of homeschooling. Today, I’m thrilled to share in a collaboration with other secular homeschool moms for a quick chat and to answer some fun questions about our homeschooling journey.

Be sure to subscribe to our monthly newsletter to be an insider and to follow along with our days over on Instagram @makingeverydaymagic.

This collaboration is hosted by Valerie at Our Homeschool Castle, and I’m excited to be a part of it. We have a playlist of homeschool mom stories that I will link down below, so be sure to check out everyone’s experiences and give them some love. Valerie provided us with a few questions to answer, so let’s jump right into it!

Homeschool Moms Quick Chat

Question #1: Introduction to Our Homeschool

I’m Shanna, and I’ve been sharing our secular homeschool journey for four years now. We started this channel just before the global situation hit, making it an ideal time to talk about homeschooling. We’re heading into our eighth year of homeschooling with a seventh grader and a third grader, both girls aged 12 and 8.

We prefer secular curriculum choices when possible. While I have experience with neutral curriculums, we avoid anything that conflicts with our values. We don’t use Christian-based curriculums as we’ve chosen to keep our personal faith separate from our homeschooling. I always tweak our curriculum to fit our needs, and I’m a big proponent of quitting things that don’t work for us.

Question #2: Something New in Our Homeschool

A new goal for me this year is to do less and focus more on fun aspects of homeschooling. I plan to incorporate more art, like watercolors, instead of traditional journaling or note-taking. In our personal lives, we’re dealing with home repairs after a leak, and I’m looking forward to getting everything organized and feeling like a new human again.

Question #3: Favorite Curriculum Company

We love Timberdoodle for the fun elements in their kits and the Michael Clay Thompson language arts program for its unique approach to language arts. This program treats words as art and emphasizes understanding and appreciating language in a deep and meaningful way.

Question #4: Favorite Things About Homeschool

Our favorite things about homeschooling include seeing our kids learn, keeping our family unit together, and having the freedom to travel when others can’t. Homeschooling gives us timeβ€”the most valuable resourceβ€”to spend with our loved ones and do what we love.

Questions #5 & #6: Good Day/Bad Day Example

A good homeschool day starts with me being organized and ready, engaging with my kids from the start. Our favorite days are Mom and Me Mondays, where we work through everything together. A bad day usually begins with me feeling rushed and frazzled, which translates to my kids. It’s important to recognize when to call it a day and end on a positive note rather than pushing through and ending up frustrated.

Question #7: How Do You Recharge?

As a homeschool mom, recharging is crucial. I enjoy changing my hair, having creative outlets, getting out in the sun, and organizing my home. Prioritizing sleep is essential for me to be productive and happy. Making time for fun activities and ensuring I get good sleep helps me recharge and stay energized.

Question #8: Free Resource

We love using Duolingo and YouTube videos as free resources. There are so many high-quality, free resources available that you can build a comprehensive homeschool curriculum without spending a dime. You just need to find them!

I hope you found this helpful, entertaining, or informative. Be sure to subscribe to our monthly newsletter to be an insider and to follow along with our days over on Instagram @makingeverydaymagic.

Happy homeschooling!
