Our Homeschooling Journey

It’s incredible how fast the school year is progressing. This year, we have a sixth-grader and a second-grader. Today, I want to share our experiences and insights from the first eight weeks of our homeschooling adventure.

Changes in Our Personal Life

Before delving into the academic aspects, let’s talk about some personal life changes that have had a profound impact on our homeschool this year. We’ve introduced a new routine of setting alarms for the kids. Their alarms go off at 7:00 AM, giving them 30 minutes of playtime, which is crucial for my younger one. It aligns with her love language and ensures she starts the day in high spirits. Additionally, I’ve made a conscious effort to get up and get fully ready each day, creating a consistent schedule.

A Day in the Life of Our Homeschool

This week was a bit unusual due to various fun events and extracurricular activities. We even had a delightful day at the interactive aquarium and zoo with our local homeschool group. Given these events, we had to shuffle our usual homeschool routine. We temporarily skipped some lessons, like spelling, Khan Academy, and Crash Course Mythology. But don’t worry; it’s all about flexibility, and we’ll catch up in the coming weeks.

Academic Progress

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of our academic journey over the past eight weeks.

  • Language Arts for the Second Grader: Our second-grader has made remarkable progress in reading, grammar, and spelling. The All About Reading program has played a pivotal role in her success, aligning seamlessly with the All About Spelling curriculum.
  • Language Arts for the Sixth Grader: Our sixth-grader is tackling more advanced language arts topics. We’ll have a dedicated video about our experience with All About Spelling soon. She’s progressing well in reading, writing, and grammar.
  • Math: Both of our kids are excelling in math. Our second-grader is mastering multiplication, while our sixth-grader is diving into pre-algebra.
  • Big History Project: We’re thrilled to have reached the third unit of the Big History Project, covering topics like the Big Bang and the formation of stars. We love the structured approach provided by Khan Academy.
  • Science Curriculum: We tried a new science curriculum, Discover Science. Initially, it seemed fantastic, but in practice, it proved to be too much. We adjusted our approach, focusing on the parts that work for us while simplifying the rest.

The Extras

Our family game nights have been a hit. We’re rotating through various games, including Monopoly Junior, which had been collecting dust. It’s a great way to blend learning and fun. Additionally, we’ve been enjoying the Cultured Kid program, exploring different languages and cultures together as a family.
