10 Things I Avoid Doing in December for a Stress-Free Holiday Season
If December has ever felt like a runaway sleigh—full of obligations, events, and expectations—you’re not alone. The holiday season can get overwhelming fast, and protecting your peace becomes essential. That’s exactly why I created this list of the 10 things I avoid doing in December for a stress-free holiday. These are the boundaries, mindset shifts, and tiny lifestyle choices that help me (and my family) actually enjoy the season instead of white-knuckling our way through it.
If you’re craving calmer days, slower moments, and a holiday season with more joy and less chaos, consider this your permission slip to simplify.

1. I Don’t Overcommit—At All
There is no universal rule for what “too much” looks like, but I can feel it the moment I cross that line. One of the biggest ways I create a stress-free holiday is by refusing to overcommit. If it doesn’t fit our priorities or energy levels, it doesn’t make the cut.
If we can, we will. If we don’t want to, we won’t. Simple as that.
2. I Don’t Start New Routines in December
New habits require brain space… and December has none. This month is not the time to reinvent yourself, overhaul your schedule, or launch a new routine. We are surviving, not striving. Same person now, same person on January 1st. That’s part of my stress-free holiday mindset.
3. I Don’t Panic About Homeschool Progress
December is a weird spot in the homeschool year, but panic has no place here. I take stock, I reflect, I adjust… but I do not stress. A stress-free holiday season requires perspective, and nothing steals joy faster than obsessing over how many lessons you “should” have completed.
4. I Don’t Say Yes to Every Event
Not every invitation deserves a “yes.” Not every event is meant for you. Not every person deserves space in your December. Protect your calendar. Protect your peace. A stress-free holiday often starts with the word no.
5. I Don’t Cook Elaborate Meals Every Night
It’s December—not a cooking competition. Frozen pizza, snack dinners, peanut-butter-again nights… all fair game. Save the fancy meals for the actual holidays. Weeknight survival meals absolutely count toward the stress-free holiday lifestyle.

6. I Don’t Feel Guilty About Screen Time
Christmas movies bring us joy, and joy is the goal. So no guilt. No shame. No mental math about minutes. If a cozy family movie buys us rest during a busy season, we’re embracing it wholeheartedly. A stress-free holiday sometimes sounds like Home Alone in the background.
7. I Don’t Try to Make Everything Picture-Perfect
My home is joyful, eclectic, and lived-in—not a staged Pinterest dream. The tree won’t be symmetrical, the icing will end up in weird places, and not every moment will look Instagram-ready. But perfection isn’t the goal—presence is. That’s the heart of a stress-free holiday season.
8. I Don’t Buy Junk or Unnecessary Holiday Stuff
Big feelings here: holiday overconsumption is out of control. You don’t need more themed tins, more trendy trinkets, more “must-have” items, or another cart full of dollar-spot impulse buys.
If it doesn’t bring value or joy, it’s clutter—emotionally and physically. Less stuff means a more stress-free holiday.
9. I Don’t Skip Downtime
Downtime is non-negotiable. As a household of extroverts who still desperately need recharge time, blank space on the calendar is sacred. I treat downtime as an actual commitment… because it is. A stress-free holiday season thrives on rest.
10. I Don’t Compare My Holiday to Anyone Else’s
Comparison steals holiday joy faster than anything. What works for someone else may not work for me—and that’s the point. Our holiday season is perfect for our family, in our home, with our traditions. A true stress-free holiday begins when you stop measuring your life against anyone else’s.

Creating a Stress-Free Holiday Season That Actually Feels Magical
The older I get, the more unapologetic I become about protecting my peace—especially in December. If it brings joy, I’m all in. If it feels like an obligation, it’s a no. And if it drains me? Absolutely not.
I hope these 10 things I avoid doing in December for a stress-free holiday season help you reclaim your December, set healthy boundaries, and enjoy the tiny moments that make this time of year truly magical.
Remember: you only get so many holiday seasons with your kids at home. Make them joyful. Make them meaningful. Make them yours.
